Flexible Reward Points Transfer Partner Chart

Flexible Reward Points Transfer Chart

This is a quick tool to help identify what "flexible" points to collect to get the award tickets you need.

"Flexible" points are typically collected using certain participating credit/charge cards from American Express, Chase, Citi, Capital One. Marriott Bonvoy points can be collected either by getting an Amex co-branded credit card or through hotel stays.

{The diagram in this picture is outdated and incomplete; I still use it for quick reference but my tool is more up-to-date, and more complete with Capital One info}

To use this tool effectively, I would suggest that the first step is always have a goal in mind. Do you want to go Paris from New York, or to Hong Kong from Los Angeles?

Once you have a goal in mind, assuming you have no idea which mileage award chart is most [point] cost-effective, it's a good idea do some online research. There are plenty of blogs dedicated to this topic.

  1. The Points Guy
  2. FlyerTalk
  3. One Mile at a Time
  4. Trip+ (Chinese)

A fundamental understanding of the rules is that one can redeem flights using points from partners of the same alliance. For example, one can redeem EVA flights using United, Singapore or ANA mileage points. And get points in this mileage points, one needs to collect the corresponding flexible reward points using credit cards (if you don't intend to earn points by flying).

This tool will help you identify which credit cards to get or use to earn the points you need to "fund" the mileage program you identified.

Again, let me know how I can improve this chart. If you can think of other use-cases of this information, let me know as well.
